In this work of art,
Lulseged focuses on religious and continental issues as the main theme. From
the painting, we can see that the painter tries to convey the message by
employing expressive and symbolic art elements, including the combination of
different colors and line structures.
This painting
conveys different messages. Through the presented messages, it seems that the
painter has tried to express the concept and discourse of colonialism. From a
religious standpoint, there are clearly visible lines of black and blurred
brown color in the body of Christ that the painter used to explain in a
symbolic and artistic language that the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the
shedding of His blood are the reason for salvation. The painting is presented
in a semi-abstract and expressionist art style. The influence of the prominent
Ethiopian modern painter and poet Gebre Kristos is apparent in this artistic
work.
The
Crucifixion of the Lord takes center stage in this painting’s composition as
the main subject matter. The artist unifies the two hands Christ extends, each
holding something that is in opposition to the other. His left hand’s palm
contains a red apple, which stands in for Africa’s sorrow. The green object
that was displayed on the right hand, along with the image of an African mask,
symbolizes the richness, prosperity, and natural resources that the continent
is endowed with.
The blood
that is dripping from the side of Jesus Christ that was pierced by a spear has
reached various places of the painting and symbolizes the suffering of the
people of the continent both in the past and in the present. This work of art
is not merely embellished with unique symbols; rather, by working together
harmoniously, they significantly contribute to the message that the painting is
meant to express.
Therefore,
we can also see how the painter symbolically expressed the African continent as
a whole in a mask and invited the public to understand the main root causes of
the continent’s current political and social crises. On the contrary, the
parched livestock grazing on dry land devoid of water are depicted as a disease
symbol in the blood-stained moon. This is a great demonstration of the fact
that the people of Africa have been in constant material misery since the
colonial era until today. The work also shows that while the African
continent is rich in natural resources, it has not benefited from this wealth
due to various reasons that date back to its past and are still evident today.
